Top 10 Color Laser Printers

Color laser or LED printers come in every size and shape now, from a fast workgroup model with lots of paper handling and cheap toner, to a low-end model for a small or home office that's usually pretty slow and minimally featured, with pricey toner. Fit the printer to your page volume and you shouldn't be disappointed.

Dell 5130cdn Color Laser Printer

Everything a busy office needs is in the 5130cdn, including speed, great print quality, and features galore--plus supercheap toner.

Lexmark C792de

You could print tons on this fast and capable laser printer--but the toner costs, while moderate, are not as low as those of the competition.

HP Color LaserJet Enterprise CP4025dn Printer

The CP4025dn workgroup printer has plenty of speed and features, as well as low costs per page; photos tend to look dark, however.

Samsung CLP-775ND Color Laser Printer

Efficient speed and paper handling, and reasonably priced toner, are this workgroup model’s strengths. Photo quality is adequate.

OKI Printing Solutions C330dn

This low-priced workgroup model balances good speed and features with merely tolerable color quality and toner costs.

Brother HL-4570CDW

Competitive in speed and features, but not photo quality, this small-business workhorse laser printer is best for mainstream use.

Dell 2150cdn

A low price tag and good performance make this printer appealing, but its standard-size toner is pricey.

Xerox ColorQube 8570DN

The easy solid-ink consumables are a selling point, but the grainy color quality is disappointing.

OKI Printing Solutions C610dtn

Although the C610dtn's color quality needs some tweaking, the printer's speed and economy advantages offset that drawback.

HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451nw

Expensive toner and the lack of automatic duplexing make this small-office printer less appealing than it could be.

Before Installation of the PC Motherboard..

I recommend that  install the CPU and Heatsink/Fan before installation of the MB. It’s easier to do outside of the case.

Your new case should come with brass mounting screws that screw directly into the case and the spacers that keep the MB at a distance from the body of the case. Use the spacers! If you just screw the board straight on to the case, you will blow the whole project.

The studs are screwed into the chassis of the case.Make sure you have your anti-static protection in place, then carefully place the board into the case to determine where the studs should be put. Put a fine tip felt pen through the holes in the board and mark the chassis where the studs should go. This prevents you putting in a stud that doesn’t match up with a hole on the board. Check the positioning and screw the studs into the chassis. You can also use the plastic spacers but I generally keep them for the edges of the board if there are any spare holes on the board.

When the studs are firmly in the chassis, you can screw the motherboard in to the case via the studs.
But it is easier to install the CPU and Heatsink/Fan on the MB before you screw it into the case, because you have more room outside of the case.

HP set to merge PC and printer divisions

Hewlett-Packard is preparing to announce the merger of its Personal Systems and Imaging and Printing divisions as part of a major restructuring operation.

AllThingsD reports that the alignment of the PC and printing groups is the latest cost-cutting and streamlining exercise, following the appointment of CEO Meg Whitman.

This comes after HP's decision to hang onto its PC-making division, which is the world's largest, rather than sell it off, amid falling sales and a drop in revenue.

The IPG, long the saviour of the company's financial reports, has also seen a drop-off lately, with earnings falling 7 percent to $6.3 billion in the last quarter.

Although HP has so far refused to comment on the report, it is thought that joining the divisions will make it easier for the company to sell PCs and printers to the same folks - consumers and businesses.

Turbulent times

2012 has already been a turbulent year for Hewlett-Packard, with the company vowing to turn its disastrous WebOS acquisition into an open source success story.

The operating system cost HP $1.2 billion back in 2010, but the failure of the HP TouchPad and Pre 3 devices left the company looking for a way out.

HP will hope that this, yet to be confirmed, reshuffling operation will help to revive fortunes after a dodgy couple of years, fueled largely by indecision at the top.

An Epson WorkForce Pro printer to kick-start your IT innovation programme

*UPDATE – This competition is now closed and our winner is Sally Lawton!

“My business partner and I run a theatre school and performance space called ‘The Houldsworth School of Performing Arts’. As a brand new start up, with a very tight budget, we face many of the challenges new companies struggle with today, which is why winning this competition was a great morale booster for us.

I noticed the Epson competition on Smarta’s Twitter account and thought ‘why not?’ and entered. When I saw the tweet saying I’d won, I couldn’t quite believe it!

We’re constantly printing scripts, leaflets and posters that reflect our company and promote the work we’re doing. Producing this content and material to a high standard is absolutely crucial for us.  The Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4535 DWF printer we won is ideal for our needs. It’s perfect timing too – there’s a big launch in May, and so we’re now best placed to prepare for and promote this.”
